The new Lámha Suas Facebook app

Abair Leat!, the first ever social network dedicated to Gaeilge, has launched a new Facebook app called Lámha Suas to get people conversing in Irish online.

Drawing upon Facebook’s new wide-screen format Timeline, Lámha Suas is an interactive media-based quiz to promote the all-Gaeilge social network site which launched last month.

Abair Leat! itself is aimed at a variety of users, including second and third-level students, Irish-language professionals, Irish-language organisations, media outlets and anyone with an interest in the language.

Via the new app, users complete a round of 13 questions, including quotes from popular films dubbed over in Gaeilge, song lyrics from artists translated in Gaeilge, plus questions relating to different Irish tenses.

Users can also invite pals to take the Irish challenge and the person with the highest points will receive a new Apple iPad on 13 April, said Mícheál O Foighil of Abair Leat!

He said that up to 5,000 users have signed up for Abair Leat! since its launch in February and that the site it is being visited by 1,000 people every day.

Galway-based design company Block5 Design created the graphics for the Lámha Suas app.
