Apple will shut down its Mac OS X Download site on 6 January, the same day it plans to launch the Mac App Store.
In a letter to developers of the site, Apple said that, because they believe the Mac App Store will be “the best destination for users to discover, purchase and download” apps, the company will no longer offer apps on the Mac OS X Downloads site.
Users will be directed to the Mac App Store on 6 January instead.
The Downloads site offered apps and dashboard widgets. At this point, it’s uncertain whether the Mac App Store will offer similar widgets.
The Mac App Store aims to bring iPhone and iPad app functionality to Mac desktops and laptops.
It will feature paid and free apps under a wide variety of categories.
