BioWare has added to the hype surrounding the delayed launch of Mass Effect 3 with the release of the Take Earth Back trailer. The trailer first aired on Sunday night and has since gone on to be a hit with YouTube followers, amassing more than 1m views and 30,000 shares on Facebook in less than 48 hours.
The trailer comes as the official launch date for the epic conclusion to the trilogy draws near.
EA, the game’s publisher, had originally planned for a late 2011 launch for Mass Effect 3 but delayed it until the end of Q1 2012 to achieve “a larger market opportunity”, according to EA CEO John Riccitiello. Although the move at the time was seen as a way of avoiding conflicting launch dates with EA’s own title Battlefield 3, as well as other heavy-hitting titles like Gears of War 3, Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3.
With first week sales of Mass Effect 2 topping 2m units, it is clear the fan interest in the series is sky high, and with no other major titles set to hit the shelves in the coming weeks, this could be a massive windfall for EA this spring.
Mass Effect 3 will be released on XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC starting with a US release on March 6.
