Oscars online: stars give behind-the-scenes glimpse as viewers offer their opinions

25 Feb 2013

Last night’s Oscars ceremony simply wouldn’t have been complete without the input of social media. Whether it was an average Joe letting the world know what they really thought of these A-list celebrities, or an A-list celebrity letting the average Joe know what life is like beyond the red carpet, everyone was tuned in online to find out and share more.

Twitter has deemed last night’s buzz on the social network a ‘global Oscars party’ as 8.9m tweets were sent about the 85th Academy Awards. Of these, 2.1m were sent during the red carpet entrances and 6.8m came during the show.

Twitter users and Facebook users were largely caught up in discussing the same things. Based on tweets per minute (tpm), Argo’s Best Picture win was the most-talked-about moment at 85,300tpm, followed by Adele’s performance at 82,300tpm and Jennifer Lawrence’s Best Actress win at 71,600tpm.

On the night, social media gave fans a glimpse into the backstage scenes at the Hollywood event, thanks to the accounts of Samuel L Jackson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt et al. We also got to hear from celebrities watching from home, not to mention the usual collection of Twitter snark and humour from not-so famous viewers.

And finally, as we wave goodbye to another awards season, let’s leave ourselves with one thought: this man has two Oscars.
