Viral videos of the week

24 Jun 2012

We take a look at some of the most-viewed and most-shared videos. This week features a ‘fresh’ approach to TV psychics, ‘driving’ golf balls, and a new Pixar trailer to get excited about.

More than 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, 500 years of video watched on Facebook every day, and more than 700 YouTube videos shared on Twitter each minute, ensuring there is always video trending on the web.

With so much video available for viewing, we take a look at some of the viral videos that have caught our eye this week.

Irish caller gets fresh with TV psychic

A popular meme to start with. It has long been an internet trend to adapt The Fresh Prince of Bel Air lyrics for online jollies, but one Irish caller to a televised psychic brought new levels of subtlety to the art.

Where the hell is Matt? 2012

Matt Harding, or Dancing Matt as he is better known, is no stranger to viral videos. From his first effort in 2004 to this week’s effort, Harding’s videos have been viewed more than 80m times on YouTube.

Amazing golf shot : Golf Ball vs Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster

Proving that there’s a world record for everything, former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard and professional golfer Jake Shepard set the record for the farthest golf shot caught in a moving car.

Surface presentation FAIL

Egg -> Face for Microsoft this week, as the first look at its venture into the tablet market goes very wrong. Reminiscent of its Windows 98 fail, the device froze just as Steve Sinofsky was demoing how he could “browse smoothly” on the device. Fail!

Monster University Teaser

Before becoming the chief scare team at the Monsters, Inc. factory, Sulley and Mike attended Monster University. This is Pixar’s first venture into prequel territory and will be out next summer.

Making The Bus Monitor Cry

Finally, not all viral videos this week have made for pleasant viewing. A YouTube video of 68-year-old school-bus monitor Karen Huff Klein being bullied by students went viral, with more than 4m views in three days. There is a happy ending for Huff Klein, however, as an online vacation fund set up for her has seen donations of more than $400,000 so far.
