Mercedes-Benz wants to make the world look a little bit more like your favourite science-fiction movie by developing a fully autonomous car that drives itself.

The automobile manufacturer debuted the impressively named F 015 Luxury in Motion at CES in January, and has now invited journalists, including The Verge‘s Chris Ziegler, along to view the car’s testing phase.

As the car is not yet fully autonomous and needs a number of beacons to highlight its path, the incredibly futuristic looking F 015 Luxury in Motion is being trialed in a controlled environment in San Francisco (even if it could be let out on the streets, such vehicles are not yet legal).

The car’s features include the oh so James Bond ability to be summoned by a smartphone app. It opens and closes its doors automatically, and even speaks to nearby pedestrians, telling them to “please, go ahead” when necessary.

Don’t get too excited though. Mercedes-Benz has pencilled in 2030 as the car’s possible release date.
