Samsung sees itself at the heart of internet of things (IoT) technology in the coming years after launching its new ARTIK range of hardware designed to connect household devices.
The South Korean company now joins other major tech outfits like Intel that have begun rapidly shifting their focus towards an IoT future that market analysts predict will be worth as much as US$14.3trn by 2030.
Describing ARTIK as an open platform capable of performing well with advanced software and development boards, Samsung will launch three different version of ARTIK – ARTIK 1, ARTIK 5 and ARTIK 10.
ARTIK 1 will be the smallest of the IoT components, not just in their range but in the world, measuring 12mm x 12mm for low-power IoT with Bluetooth connectivity.
ARTIK 5 is aimed at the larger home items, as well as machines such as drones and up-market wearable devices with its 1GHz dual-core processor and DRAM.
Meanwhile, ARTIK 10 is unsurprisingly aimed at large-scale devices in industry, and potentially home servers and media devices with an eight-core processor, full 1080p video decoding/encoding, 5.1 audio and 2GB DRAM and 16GB flash memory.
