Bandwidth is 10 times greater for the Gaeltacht

17 Dec 2010

Internet bandwidth is now more than 10 times faster for businesses and universities in the western Gaeltacht regions, thanks to a collaboration between Airspeed Telecom and HEAnet.

The new high-speed telecommunications network has created cost savings, efficiency gains and commercial opportunities in the regions.

The rollout by wireless technology company AirSpeed Telecom, which was initiated by HEAnet and supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta, took place in October 2008 and the real-world cost savings, efficiency gains and commercial opportunities the bandwidth has created are impressive. NUI Galway (NUIG), Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) and local businesses, including TG4, are all benefiting from the service.

The western Gaeltacht region previously experienced highly contended, maxed-out internet connectivity, which has now been replaced with ubiquitous, almost unlimited bandwidth from AirSpeed Telecom. GMIT, NUIG and indigenous businesses, as well as multinational companies located across the West and North West of Ireland, are all using the new connectivity to tackle everything from cost control targets to entry into new markets.

Many local media and broadcasting firms such as TG4, Telegael and Nuacht are creating programming, music and Irish-language animation and have leveraged the new, affordable high-speed links to drive opportunities for collaboration and sales into Japan and the US.

AirSpeed Telecom operates a nationwide carrier class licensed wireless network providing telecommunications products and services to large enterprises, public sector bodies and SME customers in Ireland. AirSpeed Telecom recently invested €3m in its network as part of a multi-million euro long-term investment plan which demonstrates the company’s commitment to remain at the leading edge of licensed wireless transmission service provision in Ireland. This investment involved the addition of numerous high site locations to the network, providing a platform for greater national reach.
