The foundations of Dublin City trembled yesterday afternoon under the size and scale of a mass protest that took place against the Irish Government’s proposed water charges.

Plenty of chants could be heard, including to-the-point classics such as, “No way, we won’t pay” and “Enda Enda Enda, out out out”, a reference to Taoiseach Enda Kenny. There was also the more inventive, “Here comes Joan, hide your phone,” that targeted Ireland’s beleaguered Tánaiste.

But the movement could well have moved to the beat of multi-platinum selling singer Phil Coulter and his song Cool Clear Water. The track was originally released last month but a new video of the Eurovision Song Contest-winning songwriter performing the song unaccompanied was posted online yesterday, just in time for the water charges protest.

The catchy track features a number of wry lyrics including, “I used to sing in the shower for many a happy hour but now it’s all gone sour” and “I brush my teeth in haste with just the neat toothpaste, can’t afford to waste the water”.
