Xbox One ends PS4’s streak as best-selling console in the US and UK

Microsoft’s Xbox One has overtaken the Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4) to become the best-selling console in the US and UK.

As reported by IGN, Microsoft ended Sony’s streak by outselling the PS4 in November – a critical month in the pair’s ongoing tussle for hardware supremacy as the holiday season heats up. GeekWire, meanwhile, reported that 1.2m Xbox units were sold in the US during the period.

“We are committed to making Xbox the best place to play, with this year’s best games, the best community of gamers to play with, and terrific value. And we are amazed by the excitement Xbox fans have shown to start off this holiday,” said Xbox marketing’s corporate vice-president Mike Nichols in a statement released to IGN.

Microsoft did not release exact sales numbers, but Nichols added, “November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK. Response to the holiday line-up of games on Xbox One was incredible, with Xbox One fans buying more games in November in the US than any other gen eight platform and enjoying over 357m hours of gameplay globally.

“In fact, more fans logged into Xbox Live across Xbox One and Xbox 360, and enjoyed more entertainment, than any other month in the history of Xbox. We love to see the excitement from our fans and are grateful for their passion, support and contributions to the Xbox community.”

Last month, it was revealed that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were selling at a significantly higher rate than the preceding consoles did in their first year, with the installed base of the latest platforms in the US a year after their release 73pc greater than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 base was during the equivalent time period.
