Netflix animated series Bojack Horseman has surprised fans with a festive treat: a 25-minute Christmas special with the curmudgeonly TV wash-up voiced by Will Arnett.

The first season of Bojack Horseman arrived on Netflix in full in August this year. The 12-episode series follows a TV actor who peaked in the Nineties and is struggling to retain his relevance in the 21st-century. He also happens to be a horse.

In his heyday (pun intended), Bojack was the star of family sitcom Horsin’ Around and inhabits an animated universe where human and anthropomorphic characters co-exist.

As well as Arnett, who is perhaps best-known as Gob from Arrested Development, the series enlists the voice talents of Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Community’s Alison Brie, and comedians Amy Sedaris and Paul F. Tompkins.

The dark comic narrative tinged with heartfelt moments elicited mixed reviews from critics, but Bojack has found a following of fans online, who have been exhibiting their excitement at this Christmas surprise.

In the Bojack Horseman Christmas Special, Bojack and his housemate Todd (Aaron Paul) sit down to watch a Horsin’ Around Christmas special, and the show-within-a-show brings about a short-lived emotional response from the fallen star.

Bojack Horseman was renewed for a second season less than a week after the release of season one. A dozen more episodes for season two are set for production in 2015.

Elaine Burke is the host of For Tech’s Sake, a co-production from Silicon Republic and The HeadStuff Podcast Network. She was previously the editor of Silicon Republic.
