Legend of Zelda, universally recognised as one of the most influential video-game series of all time, is coming to the small screen.

That’s according to The Wall Street Journal, which claims on-demand media-streaming service Netflix is in the early stages of developing a live-action show based on the game. One source described the project as “Game of Thrones for a family audience”.

The Legend of Zelda was first released by Nintendo in 1987 and followed hero Link on his quest to rescue a princess named Zelda and save the fantasy world of Hyrule. A number of follow-ups were also made, with 1998’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time widely considered one of the greatest games of all time.

A Netflix spokesperson declined to comment to the possibility of a show, while Nintendo said the company “doesn’t comment on rumours and speculation”.

Netflix’s flagship political drama House of Cards, meanwhile, is set to make a return for a new series on 27 February.
