VLC 3.0 to come with Chromecast support

18 Feb 2015

The latest version of popular cross-platform media player VLC will support Google Chromecast, meaning users will be able to stream a wide variety of media files via the TV dongle.

As pointed out by Pocket-Lint, VLC revealed the update in a recent changelog that laid out the upgrades VLC 3.0 will receive from the current VLC 2.2 software.

Supporting Chromecast means users will be able to stream audio and video files through the dongle from Android, Mac, Windows 8.1 and Linux devices. The iOS version, however, is currently unavailable having been pulled from iTunes last year.

The Chromecast went on sale in the Ireland last July. Marketed as a cheaper alternative to the more expensive Apple TV and Roku streaming device, the dongle allows users to stream a variety of supported content directly from their device or laptop onto their HDTVs with a few basic steps.

The device works with any TV that has an HDMI port which it plugs directly in to, as well as requiring its own power supply connected either through a USB slot in the TV or directly through a wall socket.
