Music-streaming service Spotify is absorbing the misery of teenage girls everywhere, having reported a 1,900pc rise in One Direction plays following Wednesday’s news that Zayn Malik had left the boy band.
In what the company has called a ‘spike of sadness’, the massive jump occurred in the UK between 8pm and 9pm on Wednesday night as Directioners came to terms with the tragic news of Zayne’s departure.
In the US, streams peaked from 5pm-6pm Eastern Standard Time (10pm-11pm Ireland time), where there was a 769pc increase in streams. Global plays more than quadrupled during this time frame.
“One Direction are one of the biggest bands in the world, with over 1.4 billion streams on Spotify,” said the company’s head of label relations for Europe, Kevin Brown.
“Looking at One Direction’s streams on Spotify last night, we can clearly see the ‘spike of sadness’ happening around 8pm, when their millions of fans paid tribute to Zayn by listening to One Direction’s music together all over the world.”
The One Direction track that saw the biggest increase in the 3 hours following the announcement was ‘Moments’. ‘Same Mistakes’, ‘Spaces’, ‘I Wish’ and ‘Gotta Be You’ rounding out the top 5.
