Gigglebit is Siliconrepublic’s daily dose of the funny and fantastic in science and tech, to help start your day on a lighter note.

There is a school of thought out there that believes the entire world and everything that inhabits the universe is all a part of a giant computer program and that every weird event that happens is a ‘glitch in the system’.

Which begs the question: do people in our video game worlds think the same? Well no, of course not, they’re not sentient.

Regardless, if you’ve ever wanted to see how video game technology and our ability to better replicate the real world is progressing, then take a look at these two maps, which show how, in the early years of the 21st century, the maps we are capable of creating is growing exponentially by the year.

For example: the 2001 classic GTA III had a map that measured somewhere in the region of 3 sq km. Meanwhile, just five years later, Guild Wars: Nightfall released a world map that measured a whopping 38,849.82 sq km, compared with the real Dublin’s 115 sq km.

It’s like, far out, man.
