Hulu has snapped up Mindy Kaling’s comedy series The Mindy Project after Fox decided not to renew the show for a fourth season.

The online video service has confirmed the series will join its stable of original programmes, with 26 new episodes to be produced in partnership with Universal Television.

The Mindy Project is a single-camera comedy series created by, produced and starring The Office actress and best-selling author Mindy Kaling. It follows an obstetrician/gynecologist and her attempts to balance work and a personal life.

67 episodes have been produced to date, and though each first aired on Fox – a more traditional television network – Hulu claims the show has been consistently popular with its subscribers.

“Mindy has always been a beloved member of the Hulu family and we know her millions of fans will be eager to find out what Mindy still has in store for the next chapter,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Hulu says a premiere date for season four of The Mindy Project will be announced at a later time.

The series isn’t the first to be cancelled by a TV station only to be resurrected by a digital streaming service. The fourth season of crime show Longmire is due to be released via Netflix following US cable network A&E’s decision to dump the show, while much-loved comedy series Arrested Development also made its comeback through the California-based media company.
