See space in 4K: NASA to launch UHD TV channel in US

NASA is set to bring the stars even closer after partnering with Harmonic to deliver a TV channel that will allow us to see space in 4K.

The channel, NASA TV UHD, will be the first-ever non-commercial consumer ultra-high definition channel in North America, broadcasting at 4K (four times the resolution of full HD).

Once the channel launches, viewers will be able to see space in 4K, seeing high-res images and video from the International Space Station (ISS) and other missions, as well as remastered footage from historical missions, according to a NASA press release.

For anyone fascinated by space, and even for those who aren’t, this is groundbreaking. It will enable us to follow in the footsteps of astronauts and walk among the stars in a way that was impossible before now.

It will make explorers of all of us.

“As NASA reaches new heights and reveals the unknown, the NASA TV UHD channel can bring that journey to life in every home,” said Peter Alexander, chief marketing officer at Harmonic.

Harmonic, a video delivery infrastructure company, is currently in discussions with key operators in the US to secure deals to have the channel carried on their satellite, cable and optical networks.

While the channel will only be carried by US networks, it will also stream online, making the wonders of space travel accessible all over the world (to anyone with a connection speed of at least 13Mbps).

NASA TV UHD is expected to launch on 1 November, following preliminary tests.
