Playstation gamers are in for a treat today (6 April) with a new PS4 update that brings gaming to new devices, and lets you keep tabs of players online.
Sony is releasing an update for the PS4 today (6 April), with new social features like appearing offline, friend notifications and easier ways to find your mates online. It sounds a bit like what Xbox has been doing for years.
Other updates are a bit more exciting, though, with remote play spreading out to Windows 8.1 and 10, as well as OS X 10.10 and 10.11. Frame rate and resolution options have been created, as well as Dailymotion being added to Live. Again, this is largely catch-up with Xbox.
The DualShock 4 controller can be used for remote play, connected by a USB, and the apps that can be used through remote play are available here.
Future’s, made of, virtual reality
Later this year, PS4 owners will no doubt head towards the VR world, with a €399 Sony device due out in October.
The confirmation of the price and release month of the PlayStation (PS) VR reveals that Sony is really looking to undercut its biggest rivals, such as Oculus and HTC, in the soon-to-be competitive gaming VR space, with both its rivals releasing their own headsets in the coming months.
All these moves come after Sony bundled all of its PlayStation interests into one company that will be headquartered in Silicon Valley.
The new company is Sony Interactive Entertainment, headquartered in San Mateo and uniting the hardware and software units of Sony Computer Entertainment and the PlayStation Network Services as one organisation.
“The formation of SIE will create an even stronger PlayStation,” Shawn Layden, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment USA, said in January.
