The US is celebrating its Independence Day today, otherwise known as the 4th of July, and to help mark the occasion are internet memes that have been inspired by the federal holiday.

A 4th of July celebration is taking place in Ireland, too. Limerick is the location for 4th of July Limerick 2013, a festival that not only celebrates American independence, but also the impact the US has had on the greater Limerick region, according to Discover Ireland.

At its heart, today is all about the anniversary of the US’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776, which declared the country’s independence from the Kingdom of Britain.

Traditionally, the 4th of July is celebrated with fireworks, barbecues, parades, concerts and family get-togethers. And now, memes have joined the festivities:
