The news that actor Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in the next Batman film has not gone over well with internet users. Twitter users have taken to the microblogging site to voice their reactions, an online petition has been created protesting the casting decision, and memes have been springing up faster than the caped crusader responds to a bat signal.
Warner Bros Pictures announced yesterday that Affleck will replace Christian Bale in the sequel to the Superman film Man of Steel. The yet-to-be titled film is set for release in 2015.
“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular superheroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill and then some,” AFP reported Warner Bros president Greg Silverman has having said.
Judging from reaction online, film fans disagree, unable to see Affleck in the superhero role.
‘Ben Affleck‘ has been trending on Twitter, where some users are calling for fairness, asking others to give Affleck and a chance and save their judgment until after they have seen the film.
An online petition at Change.org is titled ‘Warner Brothers: Remove Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Superman/Batman movie‘.
“His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won’t do the role justice,” the introduction to the petition reads. “He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman. His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he’s not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else.”
So far, more than 1,000 people have signed the petition. Others have created memes:
