Blu-ray is on the way out, Microsoft says

Blu-ray will be “passed by as a format”, said Stephen McGill, the head of Xbox operations in the UK.

McGill believes there will be a much higher demand for digital media distribution as opposed to physical means.

“Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format,” said McGill.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 had originally sided with the HD DVD format for the console, snubbing Blu-ray. Sony took on Blu-ray for the PS3.

However, even though Blu-ray won out against HD DVD as the successor of the DVD, Microsoft doesn’t seem to regret overlooking it.

“People now recognise what a smart decision it was to keep the (Xbox 360) pricing low,” McGill said.

With faster broadband connectivity and the ability to stream HD movies online, it seems that there is a move in the industry away from discs as holders of media entertainment.
