On 22 September, the owner of a distinctive-looking then-five-month-old kitten posted a photo of her pet on Reddit, and well, the rest is Grumpy Cat meme history.
When that photo of Grumpy Cat – real name Tardar Sauce – went up on Reddit, some viewers claimed it had to be Photoshopped, because, well, what cat really looks that perturbed?
To prove the feline is the genuine article, its owner, Arizona resident Tabatha Bundesen, posted a few videos of Tardar Sauce on YouTube and they went viral.
Now, six months later, ‘Grumpy Cat’ has spawned merchandise, a Facebook page, a Twitter account, a YouTube channel, website, and a multitude of memes.
Tardar Sauce is of mixed breed – her mom is a calico and her father is a grey and white tabby – and her petite size and famous face is likely due to feline dwarfism, Grumpy Cat’s website states.
“Tardar Sauce visits the vet regularly and she has a clean bill of health,” the website added.
