Heineken’s Star Player app gives Irish fans chance to win UEFA Champions League tickets

19 Sep 2012

The 2012/2013 season of the UEFA Champions League got off to a flying start last night and now Heineken, sponsors of the tournament, are challenging Irish fans to test their football prediction skills for a chance to win tickets to a Champions League game.

The Star Player app from Heineken is available as a free download for iPhone and Android smartphones and can also be played online. Players earn points for correctly predicting goals, corner kicks and free kicks during matches in real-time, and they can compete and share results in their own league or go head-to-head with fans around the world through ‘Interactive Champions League’.

More than 6,000 fans from Ireland signed up to play Star Player last year and this year Heineken will reward the Irish player with the best individual match score at the end of the league with an exclusive VIP trip to a UEFA Champions League match. Because the prize is based on scores from individual matches and not a cumulative ranking, each match is a new chance to win.

The Champions League kicked off with the first matches of the group stage last night, which saw champions of the English Premiership Manchester City take on Real Madrid. The most memorable moment of the night’s action was Real Madrid manager José Mourinho’s emphatic celebration following the winning goal from Cristiano Ronaldo in the 3-2 game, which has been doing the rounds on social networks in various forms since.

The group stage of the tournament continues tonight with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Chelsea and Celtic starting their campaigns.
