More than 3m copies of Gears of War 3 sold in a week

More than 3m copies of Gears of War 3 have been sold within its first week of release, which is more sold than any game release in 2011 to date, according to Microsoft.

In total, the Gears of War franchise has earned US$1bn in lifetime sales so far.

Gears of War was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the platform ever since,” said Microsoft corporate vice-president Phil Spencer.

Gears of War 3 launched last week, with more than 22,000 stores worldwide opening at midnight to accommodate the launch. In Ireland, 69 stores opened at midnight for the release of the game.

The standard edition Gears of Wars 3 costs €69.99, Limited Edition costs €84.99 and Epic Edition costs €129.99.
