Morrissey tweet attracts 200k followers – heaven knows he isn’t miserable now

15 May 2014

Musician Morrissey’s first tweet – five years after setting up his Twitter account – has attracted more than 200,000 new followers.

UPDATE – Morrissey has since publicly stated that the Twitter account in question is in fact bogus

The ex-Smiths singer published his autobiography with Penguin last year, and his first tweet read: “Hello. Testing, 1, 2, 3. Planet Earth, are you there? One can only hope…”

The tweet netted Morrissey 200,000 new followers and was retweeted 16,000 times.

Hours later he followed this up with: “Follow, follow, follow. Twitter is the perfect metaphor for…something. Dunno what.”

The timing of the tweet is interesting and fortuitous, considering is comes just a day after he released his long-awaited single World Peace is None of Your Business.

At the time of writing, Morrissey’s follower base on Twitter stood at 219,225 followers.
