RTÉ brings out HTML5 version of mobile site

22 Sep 2011

Ireland’s State broadcaster RTÉ has redesigned its mobile site m.rte.ie and has it optimised for the new generation of smartphones by designing it in HTML5.

The new site is designed to work smoothly on iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry and a variety of other mobile devices with Webkit or Opera-based web browsers.

The mobile site features a selection of content from RTÉ.ie’s four main editorial strands, as well as live streaming of RTÉ News Now, weather, lotto, cinema and TV listings.

The enhanced mobile version of a new Lifestyle website on rté.ie is also under development.

The new site is built with HTML5 and CSS3, making this the first RTÉ website to utilise these technologies.

A basic version of the mobile site is still accessible at lite.rte.ie and all users with unsupported handsets will be directed to here.

HTML5 key to future RTÉ digital products

“At RTÉ we’re always looking for new technologies that we feel bring something better to the user experience of RTÉ’s digital products,” said Michael Lisovski, RTÉ Publishing’s design and production manager.

“We feel that HTML5 does exactly that, so we’re delighted to announce this redesign of the m.rte.ie site, knowing that it is in keeping with the quality of services and content that mobile users have come to expect of RTÉ,” Lisovski said.
