RTÉ News Now app hits 100,000 downloads in four months

28 Jun 2011

RTÉ has revealed its News Now app has been downloaded 100,000 times in the last four months, bringing the total number of individual downloads of the app to 300,000.

The first RTÉ News Now app was initially developed to offer iPhone and iPod touch users all the latest and breaking national and international news, sport, business and entertainment stories from the RTÉ website. An app for Android phones followed later.

Earlier this year, a further app specifically optimised for the iPad was launched.

With pages designed on a dual viewing mode, this meant all RTÉ News Now content on the iPad could be viewed at a portrait or landscape viewing angle.

Podcasts of recent radio news shows, a wide range of live and on-demand video content and enhanced social media features all added to an enriched user experience.

The future of news

“We’re extremely proud of these recent figures,” said RTÉ Publishing executive director Múirne Laffan.

“Delivering RTÉ News Now to a range of mobile devices is a continuation of the work RTÉ does to enhance its public service and value,” she added.

It is understood that iPhone and iPod touch account for 77.7pc of the download, while Android and iPad make up 13.4pc and 8.9pc respectively.

The countries outside of Ireland which account for the most downloads are the UK, the USA and Australia.

The RTÉ News Now app was developed by RTÉ Publishing and Digital Reach Group (DRG).
