Controversial spy spoof movie The Interview will be made available to stream via Netflix in the US and Canada from this Saturday (24 January).
The news comes on the back of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s claim that the film has netted US$40m in digital sales following last month’s decision to cancel its 25 December US theatrical release.
As pointed out by TechCrunch, The Interview has already been available from various services, including YouTube and Amazon. But while those outlets required users to pay extra to see the comedy, Netflix subscribers can stream it for no extra cost.
An official Irish release date – via cinemas, Netflix or otherwise – has yet to be announced.
The movie’s US release was originally cancelled because of threats made by hackers to cinemas. The threats came just weeks after a cyberattack against Sony Pictures Entertainment knocked much of firm’s network offline, resulted in the theft and distribution online of five movies about to be released to cinemas worldwide, as well as the exposure of vital records, including celebrity data and more than 47,000 social security numbers.
