The companion app for UPC’s digital TV service is now available to Android users from Google Play. The app offers users a TV guide, remote recording and live-streaming, but some features aren’t as mobile as you may hope.

The Horizon TV app can be used by UPC customers who have a broadband subscription with either a Horizon TV HD+ or Digital+ set-top box. It’s free to download and allows users to stream live TV from a selection of 50 channels, though this feature is only available when connected to UPC broadband.

Outside of the house, on any other Wi-Fi or data connection, users can use the app to check the TV guide and schedule recordings.

While useful, the lack of truly mobile streaming has the UPC app falling short on competition from Sky.

That said, the iOS app, which has been available since April 2013, is still getting plenty of use from customers who are tapping into 400,000 streams per month.

“In recent years, TV viewing trends have changed with the introduction of mobile devices revolutionising how people enjoy the TV they love. People want to watch on as many devices as possible so we’re committed to bring the best experiences to our customers across multiple devices,” said Andy May, TV product development manager at UPC Ireland.

The UPC Horizon TV app is available for Android tablets and smartphones running Android version 4.0.3 and higher. Though not all 4.4 devices have been tested, UPC is confident the app will function smoothly across this range.
