Future Creators returns to shine limelight on Dublin’s creative minds

29 Jan 2016

As it celebrates its fifth year, the Future Creators programme returns with help from TV3 to give young people the opportunity to hone their digital media skills using The Digital Hub’s facilities.

Started in 2011, the Future Creators programme sees The Digital Hub team up with the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) and H2 Learning to equip young people aged 13 to 16 from the Dublin 8 with the digital skills they would need to let their creative skills loose.

These include coding, app development, digital photography, filmmaking, and website development, as well as the opportunity to expose them to the possibilities found in a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).

This year has seen a record number of applicants, with 50 people from the Dublin 8 area applying for the programme, with 24 successful students currently participating in the course.

The students meet twice a week at The Digital Hub and at NCAD for three workshops.

Ma, I’m on the telly!

To give an idea of what they have been getting up to, the first semester has introduced them to sound editing, coding, graphic design, robotics, and social media; while next month they will decide whether they want to focus on coding or film projects.

As part of TV3’s involvement in the programme, 3e will broadcast a short film produced by the Future Creators class of 2015.

The film, called I Wish I Knew, highlights the dangers of drug abuse and will be shown tomorrow night (30 January) at 9pm.

Gerry Macken, CEO of The Digital Hub, said of the partnership: “The Digital Hub is once again delighted to work with TV3 Group to provide young people from the local Liberties area with the opportunity to learn more about the world of digital media, and in particular television and ad production. These industry insights are invaluable to young people as they make crucial decisions about their future careers.”
