Moycullen’s Termin8tors wins 10th Lego robotics challenge

1 Feb 2016

The First Lego League was on over the weekend, with Termin8tors, made up of schoolkids from Moycullen, Co Galway, emerging victorious.

Taking both the Champions Award and the Robot Performance Award, Termin8tors won the competition for the second time, with its team triumphing back in 2012, too.

Now in its 10th year, First Lego League sees students from primary and secondary level – as well as a number of youth and after-school groups – build a working robot made from Lego.

Termin8tors will travel to Loughborough in February to represent Ireland in the UK and Ireland finals, with the winners progressing to the EU championships.

SAP has backed the tournament since it began 10 years ago, with Liam Ryan, MD of SAP Ireland, noting the digital economy as a key reason why children need to look at challenges like this as valuable tools for later life.

“Five technology trends have converged into the digital economy – hyper-connectivity, supercomputing, cloud computing, a smarter world based on outcomes and cybersecurity,” he said.

“The First Lego League offers participants insights into these trends. It encourages logical thinking and problem solving.

“They get to demonstrate their organisational, presentation and interpersonal skills during the different phases. The robotic element is a practical example of coding in action.”

Other awards over the weekend included a research prize for Clontuskert NS (Galway), an innovative solutions prize for The Reclaimers (Galway), mechanical design for SGC Robotics (Mayo), and strategy innovation to St Geralds (Wicklow).
