Apple has agreed to pay US$5m as part of a settlement with Taiwanese chip maker Elan Microelectronics, over patent related to multitouch technology.
Elan sued Apple in 2009 in relation to its patent covering the ability to detect the use of one or more fingers on a touch pad.
According to Reuters, Apple countersued, accusing Elan of infringing two Apple touch pad-related patents.
Elan complained to the International Trade Commission, seeking to ban imports into the US of iPhone, iPod, iPad, Magic Mouse and MacBook products.
As part of the settlement, both companies have agreed to use each other’s patents.
