CIT students compete in international medical engineering contest

28 Feb 2012

A team of third-year Cork Institute of Technology students will compete at the 24th International Medical Engineering competition in London today.

The team, which includes Danny Allen, Patrick Byrnes and Richard Childs, have been shortlisted from a worldwide selection of teams to three finalists in the Undergraduates/First Year Taught Masters Vicon Prize for Best Medical Engineer Project. Their project is about the automation of a prosthetic shoulder sandblasting process.

The competition is open to recent graduates, third and fourth-year undergraduates and taught masters degree students who have completed or are working on a project in medical engineering.

CIT students have been successful in this competition, achieving seven first places and six runner-up finalists. In 2011, CIT mechanical engineering student Mark Quigley achieved joint second place overall and was first placed undergraduate student in the Corin Group prize for Best Healthcare Technology Project. The project was in contact lens manufacturing process optimisation.

Biomedical engineering student Padraig Herbert was a finalist in the JRI prize for Best Medical Engineering Exhibited and Presented Project in the same year.
