The importance of the further development of space projects have been laid out by the 7th Space Council (European Union [EU] and European Space Agency [ESA]) and they have pledged continuing support for the implementation of its flagship space projects.
According to the council, an accurate and reliable space infrastructure is vital for the transport sector.
A satellite navigation system, they contend, could provide “numerous opportunities for increasing Europe’s competitiveness and innovation”.
Every day life
The council said it is increasingly used in every day life practices, such as healthcare and agriculture, and projects like the European satellite navigation system Galileo will provide positioning information with “unprecedented accuracy”.
As a precursor to Galileo, the EU, the ESA and Eurocontrol, European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, are running the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS), which can be used for precision farming and has been employed to guide blind pedestrians as they navigate streets.
