Gigglebit: Bottled water is overrated, why not try a blob?

3 Apr 2015

Gigglebit is Siliconrepublic’s daily look at the lighter side of science and techology – such as doing away with water bottles and drinking H2O straight from it’s gelatinous shell …

Those behind the wonderfully named Skipping Rocks Lab have developed a weird, jelly casing for water that’s entirely edible and entirely strange.

Bidding to replace plastic bottles, which are incredibly destructive to pretty much every environment, the team think they’re on to something.

Called Ooho!, the creation won the Lexus Design Award. But so far it looks a bit clumsy, although the promo video looks fun.

Skipping Rocks basically devised a way for even limited cooks to create servings of water wrapped up in an algae-based gel. You can pierce the gel and drink the water, or consume the whole thing if you’re a proper savage.

But hey, sports enthusiasts are fans of snapping up the latest cool product, so maybe this will catch on. Or, more likely, an elaborate evolution of the standard water fight will ensue.

Interestingly the finished product, seen in the video falling everywhere after it’s pierced, appears remarkably similar to how water looks aboard the International Space Station.
