Berlin’s Fraunhofer Institute of Reliability and Microintegration claims the Iameco wooden PC is the most environmentally friendly PC in the world, and Dublin-based MicroPro Computers will introduce the touchscreen computer to the European market at the Electronics Goes Green conference in Berlin this September.
Launched in Ireland last year, the Iameco PC became the first desktop computer to carry the prestigious EU Eco Flower label, the most difficult environmental standard to secure.
The touchscreen PC has earned this standard through having a carbon footprint that is 70pc less than the average computer. Almost all of the materials used in its manufacture are recyclable, including the wooden frame, and 20pc of these materials can be recycled immediately and used to repair other computers.
Hazardous materials that are used in the manufacturing process have been reduced to a minimum and replaced with more environmentally friendly alternatives. Conventional lighting has been replaced with LED lighting, which is 30-40pc more energy efficient, and the energy required to cool the PC is cut down by switching out the traditional fans for copper tubing and heat sinks.
The device also uses standard computer components to ensure it can be updated, maintained and repaired easily.
