Students to reveal their digital tech projects tomorrow in Dublin

20 Jun 2012

Twenty-four secondary school students who have been taking part in an after-school programme at the Digital Hub in Dublin since last year will be revealing their app, film and computer programming projects in Dublin tomorrow.

The students, who range in age from 13 to 16, all hail from the Liberties area of Dublin City. They took part in the pilot phase of the Future Creators programme, developed by the learning team at the Digital Hub, the Irish Government initiative to create digital content and technology enterprises in the Thomas Street area of Dublin City.

The aim of the Future Creators programme was to show how digital skills such as coding, app development and computer programming can be taught to secondary school students throughout Ireland to equip them with the skills to pursue a career in the digital media or technology space.

The 24 students went to the Digital Hub after school to work on their projects and they were tutored by experts from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD).

Some of the innovations that the students have come up with include iPad apps on topics such as their favourite band. Another student created an app on curry, with a review of restaurants that he felt provide the best curries in Dublin.

Some of the students also worked on film content, audio packages and a movie review and trailer.

Dr Stephen Brennan, director of marketing and strategy at the Digital Hub, said the pilot programme demonstrates how digital technology can be integrated into the curriculum at secondary-school level.

“We need to see digital tools become an everyday part of teaching and learning in schools throughout Ireland,” he said.

Tomorrow’s event is open to all and will take place at 3pm in the Harry Clarke Lecture Theatre, at NCAD on Thomas Street.

Research and Innovation Minister Sean Sherlock, TD, will be speaking at the event, as well as presenting certificates to the students who took part in the pilot phase of Future Creators.
