TomTom and Renault create first in-dash nav system for e-cars

TomTom and Renault teamed up to launch the first in-dash navigation system for electric vehicles, which has been integrated with the Fluence Z.E. as standard.

The Carminat TomTom Z.E. LIVE receives data from the battery on its current state of charge to determine the available range of the vehicle.

It uses this to show the journey against this range and routes to charge stations on the navigation screen.

It’s hoped this will help reduce drivers’ “range anxiety” for electric vehicles, letting them plan their routes based on their batteries’ charges.

The system also includes eco-routing, giving the driver the choice of selecting the most energy-efficient route.

Data on new charging stations can be added by connecting the driver’s SD card to a computer and updating it with the TomTom Home application.

The Carminat TomTom Z.E. LIVE comes with LIVE Services, such as HD Traffic, which offers the fastest route based on the latest traffic data. Drivers can also search using TomTom Places, as well as Google local search.

The system also includes weather data, safety camera alerts and advanced lane guidance to let drivers know which lanes they should take for certain turns.
