Four web inventors have recently been awarded ‘Best European Web Entrepreneurs of the Year’ by a European Commission-backed body.

The 2014 winners were announced after six months’ competition, with the European Commission, Deloitte, European Young Innovators Forum and HUB Institute all behind the awards.

Prezi’s Peter Arvai won European entrepreneur of the year, with Alumn-e’s Guillermo Garcia bagging young entrepreneur of the year, succeeding last year’s winners Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss of SoundCloud, and Jon Reynolds of SwiftKey.

In the competition’s two new categories – high-growth web entrepreneur and female web entrepreneur – Miguel Arias from CartoDB and paij GmbH’s Sylvia Klein stole the show.

The winners are set to benefit from “access to some of the best mentors and finance schemes to help their business grow and thrive on a European and global scale”.

Of this year’s crop, Prezi developed a presentation service, Alumn-e is an e-learning company, CartoDB offers a cloud-based solution for all your mapping needs, and paij is a mobile payments service.
