Department store Arnotts has become the latest retailer and the first department store in Ireland to offer contactless payments.

Contactless cards reduce the need for shoppers to carry cash or go to ATMs. They simply touch their contactless cards against a terminal on the counter and can pay for goods without having to use a PIN if the transaction is less than €15.

The contactless system was deployed in partnership with AIB Merchant Services and Visa Europe.

The deployment follows pharmacy chain Boots going live with contactless payments in October.

BWG Foods is also in the process of rolling out contactless payment systems at Spar, Eurospar and Mace stores across Ireland.

“Improving our customers’ shopping experience is important to Arnotts and we are keen to embrace new technology to achieve this,” the IT director at Arnotts Helen Duffy explained.

“We process up to a million credit/debit card transactions and approximately 3m cash transactions in a year. We believe contactless payments will significantly speed up the purchase process for our customers and our sales team,” Duffy added.
