Twitter explodes as US celebrates National Cat Day

29 Oct 2014

While Irish cat lovers may not have noticed any change in their internet activities, the US is celebrating all things cats as 29 October is its annual National Cat Day.

Of course being the home of all things cats, the internet, and particularly Twitter, is seeing cat posts clogging people’s feeds to either the pleasure or annoyance of those on the receiving end.

While some of the internet’s most popular cats are no longer still alive, most notably Keyboard Cat and Colonel Meow, there are still a plethora of cats still hogging the limelight such as Lil’ Bub, Grumpy Cat and the most notable new addition, Garfi.

Some, meanwhile, don’t even exist in reality but are beloved by all, most notably Pusheen, the frankly adorable-looking cat that Facebook users will no-doubt be familiar with when sending them back and forth in Facebook Messenger.

Of course, the idea behind National Cat Day is not because the internet needs another day to highlight cats, but was rather started all the way back in 2005 to “help galvanise the public to recognise the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their life for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.”

Here are some of the internet’s finest additions on today, this celebration of cats … in the US, at least.

Marvel, the infamous comic book company behind the legendary characters of Spiderman, Hulk and Ironman, have gone the full nine yards with their effort this year by turning some of their most well-known characters into cats.

Meanwhile Intel have felt the need to share a slightly different take on the idea of a ‘keyboard cat’.

Good to know that Lil’ Bub sends us his wishes…

Although, Garfi doesn’t seem too keen on joining in the festivities.

Equally despondent about the whole affair is Grumpy Cat.

Have you ever wondered what an 80s yearbook picture would look like with the addition of cats? If so, then Jimmy Fallon has roped in Black Thought, Questlove Gomez and James Poyser to do just that.
