A trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been released in the last hour, causing Twitter to go into a spin at a speed faster than the Millennium Falcon when it made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.

Written and directed by JJ Abrams, the film is the first big-screen, live-action depiction of George Lucas’s universe since Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was released in 2005.

The Force Awakens picks up after the events of the original 1970s-1980s trilogy, with actors Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford all reprising their roles.

Reaction appears to have been mostly positive to the 90-second clip, as Twitter users have taken to the social network to unveil their joy. Others, however, just saw the funny side of the level of excitement emitted from fans of the series.

Here’s the trailer and some of our favourite reaction tweets.

And if you haven’t heard of Star Wars, allow The Thick of It‘s Malcolm Tucker to explain.
