#Deadlineday map charts Twitter reactions to underwhelming event

3 Feb 2015

The biannual transfer deadline day in England and Scotland has come around once again and for the first one of the year, one dataphile has mapped Twitter’s reaction to the latest wheelings and dealings in football.

This year was certainly considered an underwhelming transfer window going by previous years, with Manchester United fans wondering who exactly was Andy Kellet and why were they interested in signing a Bolton Wanderers academy player on loan?

For one data visualist who has created maps covering major news events from Ukraine to the launch of a new Beyoncé album using CartoDB, #deadlineday was considered worthy of the beautiful data treatment.

While there are similar transfer deadlines across many national football leagues, the English Premier League’s version, which finished at 11pm last night, is by far the most extravagant, bombastic of the leagues with the help of Sky Sports presenter Jim White.

This is shown in the data, with the UK proving to be the source of most tweets using the #deadlineday as it built up to the final few hours before reaching a total spend of stg£130m (€171m).
