Viral videos of the week: April Fools’ Day bonanza and cute animals take over

3 Apr 2015

This week in viral videos, every company tries to fool the public on April Fools’ Day and for some reason cute animals make a resurgence and everyone is happy again.

About 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute, 500 years of video watched on Facebook every day, and more than 700 YouTube videos shared on Twitter each minute, ensuring there is always video trending on the web.

With so much video available for viewing, we take a look at some of the viral videos that have caught our eye this week.

Rihanna pranks Jimmy Kimmel

As the self-proclaimed king of April Fools’ Day pranks, Jimmy Kimmel finally gets the tables turned against him by none other than Rihanna who decides that a performance of her new single B**ch Better Have My Money in his bedroom was the only worthy prank.

The only problem is, a prank is not supposed to be something that you’d expect someone to do, which given that Rihanna effectively films a glitzy video where money is literally thrown about the place doesn’t seem that out of the ordinary.

Just another weekend in Hollywood, eh?

WestJet’s #SmartSeats #Marketing

Next up on the April Fools’ Day roll-call, Canadian budget airline WestJet showed off their attempt with #SmartSeats, a pretty good idea if true that would allow you to take your seat on the plane in the departure lounge and be rolled into the plane.

However, you can’t help but feel watching the video that at some point, one of the company’s marketing people genuinely had this as a viable idea in their head for a split second, before realising they should probably hold off until the annual April Fools’ Day suggestions come around…

Selfie Shoes by Miz Mooz

Take three! Selifes! If you’re looking to wind people up on the internet, then it’s a safe bet that doing something selfie related will do the trick. With selfie sticks still considered a source of ridicule among the non-selfie takers, imagine what a pair of selfie shoes would do.

Of course, again, this isn’t a real product but in fairness, the idea of sticking a phone into a shoe and lifting your leg to take a selfie is just about believable in the modern world.

The obvious downside is that people who might not be so limber, or are wearing something like, say, a skirt.

Marvel’s Phase 9 – Lokitty’s Revenge

Take four! This time Marvel Entertainment are combining two of the internet’s favourite things: Avengers speculation and cute animals.

Putting Captain America, Hulk and the rest of the gang as dogs, the team must battle the might of Lokitty (you see what they did there?), in Lokitty’s Revenge.

My particular favourite was Zelda, playing the role of Black Widow, usually played by Scarlett Johansson, because pugs.

Maths prank strikes again!

There’s just one final prank to showcase and thankfully, this is a genuine non-marketing prank.

I would just like to say that I wish I had a maths teacher like Matthew Weathers when I was younger, as otherwise I may have paid more attention in maths class if antics like this were a somewhat regular occurrence.

Since 2009, he has been uploading videos using the mastery of video editing and comic timing to turn his projector screen into a stage.

This time around, he ends up having a fight with his YouTube self. Amazing.

Condor Ferries safety rap

Like watching someone about to walk into a pole because they’re texting on their phone, it’s hard not to look away from this one.

UK ferry company Condor Ferries have created a safety video that definitely gets your attention, and quite possibly, also causes you to lose the will to live.

The Sugar Hill Gang might find reason to be annoyed at the obvious copy of their rap, but the people in the video don’t seem to mind.

Bad rhyming, cringeworthy dances and everything that makes a video truly something that can only exist online.

Important information from my Armenian dad

You know that disposable barbeque you use on the one nice day of the year? Well, according to Yervand, an Armenian living in Australia, you’re doing it all wrong.

Check out this monster barbeque with not a sausage in sight.

“Not your barbeque with the sausage, it’s all oily thing, you eating,” says Yervand. Who are we to argue?

Mime Through Time by SketchSHE

As the old saying goes, a mime through time saves nine. Well, maybe that’s not an actual saying but regardless, the comedy trio of SketchSHE do a pretty impressive job of turning a standard car into a musical time machine taking us from the 1940s to present day.

Perhaps the highlight of the video is their miming of Eminem’s The Real Slim Shady. Funny but creepy at the same time. Marvellous.
