Mrs Brown says her piece

Comedian Brendan O’Carroll threatened to ‘break the internet’ when he and his monster-hit creation Mrs Brown jumped into the debate surrounding the same-sex marriage referendum.

Social media has played a huge role in the campaigns in Ireland’s upcoming referendum on same-sex marriage.

Much debate on the topic has taken place on social media and #marref has been featuring in Ireland’s top Twitter trends for weeks now. Many supporters of the Yes campaign are also using their social media accounts to make their position clear by changing their avatars so that they say ‘Yes Equality 2015’.

O’Carroll and his alter ego Mrs Brown weighed into the debate by releasing a video on YouTube in which the Irish ‘mammy-in-chief’ expresses her support for a Yes vote, with Mrs B of the opinion that “we all have to grow up a little bit”.

The video, which also features O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown’s Boys co-star Rory Cowan and was directed by Irish director Lenny Abrahamson, received a hugely positive response on Twitter yesterday.

However, one Twitter user did question the reference Mrs Brown makes to “midgets” during the clip.
