Oliver Stone’s upcoming movie about Edward Snowden, the world’s most famous whistleblower, has just released it’s first trailer, which only stars an upside-down American flag.
Ominous music plays over the footage, with a LinkedIn synopsis of Snowden’s 20s dropped onto the screen.
‘Army recruit at 20’, flag. ‘Joined CIA at 22’, flag. ‘NSA contractor at 26’, flag. ‘By age 29 the most wanted man in the world’, flag.
To be honest, if you were to add some Bruce Springsteen to this trailer, rather than its grim, creepy music, and Instagram the shade, you could pass it off as an American hero movie.
Well, it could still be that, depending on your point of view.
But what’s really telling is we see no sign of the movie’s stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt or Shailene Woodley, we just see the flag and a fine “one nation under surveillance for liberty and justice for all” sign-off. It’s a nice, fitting call to arms.
For anyone who somehow still doesn’t know who Edward Snowden is, or what his story is about, he released countless files that were evidence of wide-scale surveillance by the US spying agency the NSA. It helped uncover activities all over the world, revealing activities by many countries.
There has already been a movie made about him, Laura Poitras’ excellent documentary Citizenfour. If you haven’t seen it, do.
