Star Wars trailer as you’ve never seen it before

Star Wars BB-8, as seen in Dumb Drum's sweded teaser trailer

As the release date of Star Wars: The Force Awakens draws ever closer, Star Wars everything is invading our lives.

We’ve had Star Wars-powered Duracell ads, the adorable Sphero BB-8, and seemingly endless new trailers and new footage.

Now, one of those myriad trailers has been sweded, giving the multi-billion dollar franchise a new, low-budget, high-fun remake.

Sweding, for those unaware of the concept, is basically remaking something from the ground up, using whatever random things you can get your hands on. Popularised by Jack Black and Mos Def (who now goes by Yasiin Bey) in 2008’s Be Kind, Rewind, sweding has entered the zeitgeist in a big way.

This Star Wars offering – from YouTube sweding superstars Dumb Drum – relies heavily on cardboard (the low-tech kind) and uses it in incredibly innovative ways to show explosions, bots, lightspeed and Chewbacca.

Here it is side-by-side with the actual trailer so you can see just how faithfully Dumb Drum stuck to the script.

Of course, this isn’t Dumb Drum’s first foray into Star Wars sweding. Here’s one they made almost a year ago, based on the Force Awakens teaser trailer – again, with side-by-side comparison.

If possible, this one is even more epic.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in Irish theatres from 17 December.
