It’s been 20 years since the first film blew up all of the US’ famous monuments, but now the trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence has hit our screens, promising us even more explosions, and Jeff Goldblum.
The Independence Day: Resurgence trailer has been a long time coming for fans of the film that followed Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith), David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and President Thomas J Whitmore (Bill Pullman) as they tried to halt an alien invasion amidst some large explosions.
Incredibly, in the film, Hiller and Levinson take down the alien mothership with the help of an Apple Powerbook, which was completely compatible with the aliens’ computers.
Directed by disaster movie legend Roland Emmerich, the first Independence Day film proved to be an almighty hit at the box office, with calls for a sequel beginning not long after it was released.
But here we are, 20 years later, and now the fans finally have it.
As we see in the trailer, Goldblum’s character is now a big deal in the world, running a planetary defence programme aimed at trying to halt any future invasions as, we are told, “we always knew they were coming back”.
Pullman is back too, but if you notice a certain Will Smith is missing, well, it’s because his character died in a freak flight test accident, despite being able to pretty much take down an alien force largely by himself in the first film.
Smith’s character has now been effectively replaced by a character played by Australian actor Liam Hemsworth.
The official blurb of the film reads: “Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defence programme to protect the planet.
“But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”
If you’re someone who’s into a good bit of background lore, the producers have gone to some length to reveal what’s happened in the last 20 years on Earth with the site Warof1996.com, which features some content that might push some slower processors to their limits, but looks pretty cool.
Unsurprisingly, the film is expected to release just before the US’ Independence Day, on 24 June 2016.
