One of the world’s most famous musicians, David Bowie, has died after an 18-month battle with cancer, with news of his passing catching almost everybody off guard.

Initially sounding like one of the countless celebrity death hoaxes of the modern age, David Bowie’s death was confirmed by his publicity company earlier today (11 January).

Bowie had released his 25th studio album called Blackstar just last Friday, on his 69th birthday.

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” said a statement on Bowie’s Facebook page.

Bowie’s son Duncan went on Twitter to confirm the news, with a brief note saying he would be offline for the next while.

With that, fans, stars and world leaders shared their views on the man behind such hits as Fame, Starman, Life on Mars and Let’s Dance.
