It begins… Halloween is over, so, naturally enough, it’s time for Christmas ads. Ordinarily, I’d be up in arms about that – I still am, to be honest – but this offering from Duracell has softened my cold, Grinch-like heart just a little bit (it may even have grown three sizes).
Actually released by the battery company last week – in a controversial pre-Halloween bid to be first off the starting blocks – Duracell’s opus neatly piggybacks on the hype for the Christmas release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in a nice piece of cross-brand promotion.
Duracell rubs Star Wars’ back, etc.
Cynicism about all of this just being for the publicity notwithstanding, I’m actually totally on board.
Duracell has pulled together a rather nice piece of advertising here, setting up a rescue plot where the damsel in distress can look after herself perfectly well, thank you very much.
Accompanied, of course, by John Williams’ iconic Star Wars score, featuring C-3PO and R2-D2, and full of those pew-pew noises the franchise is famous for, the ad proves to be rousing, exciting and sweet, all at the same time.
I’m not saying I’m going to rush out and buy some batteries on the back of it, but as a way of bringing cinematic masterpieces to the small screen, this more than delivers.
